First Public Webinar of the UAEU Partnership on Food
Local Food Lessons Across the Atlantic: Examples from Michigan and beyond
This presentation will share the development of local and state level food strategies and food policy councils in the United States, using Michigan as a case study. It will then dive deeper into farmers markets — and how the framing, positioning, and policies (or lack thereof) affect this sector in the Unites States, and what implications this has for European efforts in this area. Finally, it will briefly share some creative models of local food procurement from a college-operated food hub that connects local farmers to a nearby hospital.
Having recently returned to the USA after five years in London, and as a researcher on municipal food policy and planning, in both North America and Europe, speaker, Amanda Maria Edmonds, will offer insights into how sustainable food initiatives are framed and approached on each side of the Atlantic.
Changing Food Procurement paradigma with local fully plant-based options: a Portuguese case study
The presentation addresses the integration of environment, health, and inclusivity in canteens in Portugal. First, it will focus on the importance of plant-based options for environmental sustainability. Next, the Portuguese legislation regulating these options and the reality of their implementation in canteens will be analysed. Finally, it will explore the impact of public procurement on food practices and highlight the "Prato Sustentável" (Sustainable Meals) initiative, which promotes eco-friendly and healthy eating practices.
The presentation will be introduced by Cecília Delgado, Chair of Feeding Sustainable Cities (Alimentar Cidades Sustentáveis Associação), a Portuguese NGO, followed by a presentation from Joana Oliveira, Country Director of ProVeg Portugal.
